Popular Vintage Children's Nursery Rhymes

Also: Popular Nursery Rhyme Index

Children's and baby's nursery rhymes have a long tradition, some of them being passed down through many generations for 4 or 5 centuries or more. Although intended for very young children, there are some that have quite a gruesome background and origin, although often the interpretations are disputed by nursery rhyme and other historians.

This part of the website is here as a reminder of the nursery rhymes of of old. It is inevitable, given the gap in years between being a baby or an infant, and being a parent, that parents often struggle to remember the nursery rhymes they once knew so well. Those old rhymes soon come back, though.

How have I chosen the most popular nursery rhymes? In a very biased way, I must admit. These are the nursery rhymes I can recall personally from the England of the 1950's. Many, of course, go back some centuries before then.

Below there is an index of the nursery rhymes for which you will find the words on this website, for you convenience. Recognize them all?
