Baby Clothes - Modern Swimwear

Have you ever heard of the Water Baby? Well, that name can, and I suppose should, apply to every baby. Paediatricians and other health professionals tend to agree that there is no reason why even newborn babies as young as one month old cannot go into a swimming pool. In fact, some modern mothers even give birth under water. That attitude towards water has been something of a development over recent years, as not long ago 2 months was seen as the best time to expose babies to a pool.

Of course, taking baby swimming means you need some baby swimwear. Well, you don't actually "need" it because babies younger than one year are better off swimming au natural. For the older babies and toddlers, though, there are a good number of choices available for swimwear.

Baby Swimsuits and Trunks

Baby swimwear, just as any baby clothes, comes in various styles. For boys, swimming gear is mostly in full body tanks and trunks, very much like those worn by older children and men. For girls there are one and two piece styles, as you would probably expect.

Remember, your baby’s skin is very sensitive, so it is very important to use an appropriate sunscreen to prevent the baby from getting a nasty sunburn when they are enjoying themselves at the pool.

Diapers For Swimming

There was a time when one potential issue used to prevent parents from taking their babies to the swimming pool. That was the worry about what would happen if the child had an “accident” in the pool. That was never really that much of an issue, as the chlorination of swimming pools is intended to combat exactly that type of problem. However, parents would refrain from taking their babies to public pools for fear of any embarrassment it may cause. Furthermore, many were reluctant even to take a baby into their own swimming pool, for fear the baby would decide to deposit its stool in the beautifully clean water. However, with the arrival of swim diapers, those fears no longer need to prevent a child from going in the water.

Swim diapers are made from polyurethane, and are lined with cotton cloth. These special diapers are machine washable and dryable, and they are the perfect answer for parents who are concerned that their babies may relieve themselves while in the swimming pool. Swim diapers are available from many stores in the US (but not in the Philippines) and online retailers, and they typically cost anywhere from $10 to $15.
